Shopping Worlds in the Change
Year after year the Christmas business is followed by the cash check. For many retailers it is the moment of truth. Thumbs up or down. This year, the German Retail Association (Handelsverband Deutschland (HDE)) is expecting a return of around 85 billion euros. After the first estimations, the thumb seems to settle down somewhere in the middle with upward and downward tendencies. In Hesse, for example, the mood is optimistic and a return of 7.7 million euro is expected, a plus of 1.2% compared to the prior year. On the other hand, the mood in Bremen is rather depressing. The retailers had hoped for a return of almost a billion, according to the Retail Association it is around 950 million. The desired plus of 1.5% compared to 2013 is thus missing. The culprit is found fast: the weather with constant rain and a wind force of 6. Therefore, the shopping center internet has an easier job. The weather is unimportant, there are no opening hours and it is also comfortable. 9 out of 100 euro are spent over the online trade according to the federal assocition e-commerce and mail order selling. For the Christmas business, the branch association forcasts a return of about 10 billion euros. Facing these numbers, an onlineshop should be obligatory for each and every stationary retailer. However, 70% have no internet-based sale.
