The Oberammergau Passion Play Part 1

Nearly 400 years ago the history of the Passion Play began. The plague raged in many parts of Europe and did not spare Oberammergau either.

I told you this series would be about some not so well known places in our world. If you could spell this city, pronounce it’s name, or have knowledge of the area before this article, you certainly are a world traveler. In 1633 the Oberammergau villagers promised to perform the suffering, death and resurrection of Christ every tenth year, in so far as no one was to die of the plague anymore. The villagers were answered by God and therefore in 1634 the first Passion Play took place. The promise has been kept until today. From May 16th to October 4th 2020 the 42nd Passion Play will take place in Oberammergau.

 

Once every 10 years, the Oberammergau Passion Play attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors from all over the world. In 2018 preparations are taking up speed for the 42nd Passion Play 2020, directed by Christian Stückl. A press conference at the world’s leading travel trade show in Berlin marks the beginning of the pre-sales of tickets including overnight stay(s) called “arrangements” for private individuals.
