R.I. Books Calendar: Week of April 16

Tribute: The department of literary arts at Brown University will present “Song: I Want a Witness,” a tribute to Michael S. Harper, poet and professor emeritus who died in 2016, on Tuesday, April 18, with talks at 3 p.m. and readings from his work at 7 p.m. “Song: I Want a Witness” will begin at 3 p.m. in the Lownes Room, John Hay Library, 20 Prospect St., Providence, with presentations by Robert Burns Stepto, professor of English, African-American studies and American studies at Yale University; and Anthony Walton, senior writer-in-residence at Bowdoin College and former student of Harper. A second event will take place at 7 p.m. in the McCormack Family Theater, 70 Brown St., Providence, in which friends, colleagues and former students will read from Harper’s poetry and share memories of him.
