The painting above the couch in Hilary Salk’s living room is of a deer, seemingly at peace in nature. But it wasn’t until after writing her novel, “Eavesdropping in Oberammergau,” that Salk realized the presence of this deer may have been subliminally influential – in her new book, a central character is named Stefan Hirsch (Hirsch is the German word for deer).
