What hospital merger means for us

Four St. Vincent hospitals and dozens of clinics in Arkansas will soon become part of the country’s largest nonprofit health system, but the merger is sparking questions. Catholic Health Initiatives and Dignity Health, a non-profit health system mainly in the West, are merging to form CommonSpirit Health. CHI is assuring its patients and donors that its hospitals will remain Catholic. “We aren’t looking just to take what Dignity does and what CHI does and make a collection of those two. We’re looking to create something better than what we have,” CHI St. Vincent Hot Springs outgoing president Tony Houston said.

Catholic Health Initiatives and Dignity Health will merge to become CommonSpirit Health, forming one of the country’s largest health systems. CHI operates four hospitals and several clinics in Arkansas.

Completion of the merger was delayed one month, until Jan. 31, but no explanation was given.
