Far-flung locales join perennial favorites for 2010 travel

GRAND RAPIDS — When Grand Rapids travel agent Linda DuShane stepped aboard Royal Caribbean’s new Oasis of the Seas, the world’s largest cruise ship, the word “wow” was about all she could utter.

“The center of the ship is all open to the sky, 20 stories tall,” DuShane said. “My first impression when I walked on and saw the central park area, well, you are dumbstruck.”

On the ship’s Nov. 21 inaugural cruise with two other agents from Breton Village Travel, DuShane rode a zipline, 20 stories up, across a ship three football fields long. She relaxed in a hot tub that jutted out over the ocean, watched parades featuring stilt walkers and danced disco in “streets” along a park area with live grass and soaring trees. Champagne was sipped as a glassed-in bar rose and lowered across the various decks.

It’s an experience even a “been there, done that” travel agent had never envisioned — and it’s the kind of thing many travelers seem to be seeking this new year, industry experts said.
