Eventful itineraries on the river
There are river cruises, and then there are river cruises with a little something extra. In addition to your already pretty above-average, run-of-the-mill sailing, there are many ways to experience a river cruise that offers a little something more: a special holiday celebration, the opportunity to attend a unique festival or the chance to sail with an expert in art, food or wine.
For starters, during the holidays, river cruise lines tend to really roll out the welcome mat. Most river cruise lines offer sailings from Thanksgiving through Christmas or New Year’s Day before they go dormant for the rest of winter. And while that entire time of year is festive both on and off the ship, the lines always try to make sailings that include actual holidays, such as Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day, a little extra special with unique holiday meals and special concerts and events.
For instance, this year, AmaWaterways co-owners Rudi Schreiner and Kristin Karst will host two founder’s cruises on the Danube during Thanksgiving week, the official launch of the festive season on AmaWaterways’ ships. Schreiner, the company’s president, will host a seven-night Danube cruise on Nov. 17, and Karst, who is the company’s executive vice president, will host a seven-night Danube cruise on Nov. 18. Guests will be invited to traditional Thanksgiving meals on all cruises during that week, and the founder’s cruises are likely to feature some added bonuses — a trademark of Schreiner’s and Karst’s whenever they are onboard.
