Oberammergau’s Passion Play 2020
When it comes to booking the popular Passion Play, held every 10 years in Oberammergau, Germany, it’s never too early to obtain tickets. It’s also an excellent idea to tie in the once-in-a-decade event with a broader visit to Germany, an option that tourist officials are working to make easier to sell.
The 2020 Passion Play is the 42nd to take place in the 380-plus years since it debuted in the small Bavarian town, as fulfillment of a promise made in return for an end to a plague. More than 450,000 visitors from all over the world are expected to see the play.
The premiere will be held on May 16, 2020, featuring over 2,000 local amateur actors, singers, and musicians—all of them either born and raised in the village of 5,000 residents, or having lived there for at least 20 years.
There will be 102 performances in 2020, with the last scheduled for Oct. 4. There are 4,500 seats in what the producers claim to be the world’s largest open-air theater with a roofed auditorium. In the past, more than 50 percent of the visitors who came to see the play were from English speaking countries.
The performance itself is a five-and-a-half-hour event, taking place on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Performances run from 2:30 to 5 p.m. followed by a dinner break and then the conclusion from 8 to about 10:30. Beginning on Aug. 18, 2020, when the days are shorter, the show begins an hour earlier
