Croatia fines tourists for common behaviour

The one thing you might expect to do while on an island getaway is roam around in your swimmers or perhaps without a shirt for the gentleman. But in Hvar, a popular party island in Croatia, the mayor has had enough and is fining people who do just that.
The island is popular with British tourists who visit the area for warm weather and a party atmosphere, but with that laid-back holiday attitude has come some sordid behavior including public drinking and urinating.
Signs have been put up around the island saying “Save your money and enjoy Hvar” along with information about the fines associated with certain behaviours.
Walking around in swimsuits will set you back 600 euro, 700 euro for public drinking and 500 euro for not wearing a T-shirt.
Some people have even taken to vandalising the sign by crossing out the word “Enjoy” and replacing it with “Avoid”, with some people even claiming that tourists are avoiding the island because of the changes.
“More and more guests are leaving #Hvar,” the official Dalmatian democratic Twitter page tweeted.

Newly-elected mayor, Rikardo Novak, has welcomed the fines in order to clean up the behaviours often considered normal in the area.
“They are vomiting in town, urinating on every corner, walking without T-shirts … crawling around, unconscious,” he told local media.
