Collection of Nazi memorabilia to go under the hammer in Runcorn

A COLLECTION of Nazi memorabilia including original photos and documents are set to go under the hammer at a Runcorn auctioneers.

The Auction Centre on Berkeley Court will be selling several lots on Saturday, November 7, including a previously unseen photograph album created in 1934 documenting a visit by Adolf Hitler and a large entourage of Nazis to a performance of the Oberammergau Passion Play in Bavaria.

The Fuhrer was among thousands of visitors to the performance, which gave thanks for sparing the small town from being wiped out by the Black Death, but Hitler hijacked the event and exploited it to win votes and spread anti-semitic propaganda.

In order to maximise propaganda, he appointed a High Commissioner For Tourist Traffic and ordered him to preside over the passion play committee to ensure the event served the best interest of the Nazi Party and conformed to Hitler’s vision of a new, racially pure Germany.

The Ministry Of Public Enlightenment And Propaganda commissioned the official poster to include the message Deutschland Ruft Dich! – Germany Is Calling You! – and a scheme for discount travel offering cut-price train fares, tickets and accommodation.

The album due to be sold contains more than 60 original photographs and postcards showing scenes in the village and of Hitler and his entourage.
